Lawrence Kong received his Bachelor's degree in Biology from UCLA in 1994. He continued his education at UCLA, entering the ACCESS doctoral program immediately following graduation. Lawrence joined the laboratory of Dr. Phoebe Stewart in the Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology and the Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging. His research focused on elucidating the structure of the ribonucleoprotein vault by cryo-electron microscopy and three-dimensional image reconstruction. It is thought that an understanding of the structure will help shed light on the function of the complex. Lawrence completed his graduate studies in June, 2000 and has since joined the law firm of Morrison & Foerster, LLP as a scientific analyst in the biotechnology patent group.
