Erik Wiemer studied Biology at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands and the University of Nottingham, UK. From 1985 - 1989. He was a graduate student in the laboratory of Joseph Tager in the Laboratory of Biochemistry / E.C. Slater Institute for Biochemical Research of the University of Amsterdam. Central theme of his research during this time was the biogenesis of peroxisomes in relation to peroxisomal disorders. January 1990 he left the Netherlands for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Christian de Duve Institute of Cellular Pathology in Brussels, Belgium to work in the group of Fred Opperdoes and Paul Michels on the parasitic protozoans. He studied metabolic peculiarities and the evolutionary origins of glycosomes in Trypanosoma brucei and related organisms. In May 1992 he joined the lab of Suresh Subramani at the dept. of Biology of UCSD in La Jolla to work on peroxisome biogenesis in yeast and mammalian cells. In October 1995 he moved to the dept. of Hematology of the Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Currently his main research interest is the molecular mechanisms basis of multidrug resistance. In recent years the possible relation of vaults with multidrug resistance attracted his attention. He now heads a small, but highly motivated, research group investigating the biogenesis and function of vaults. He likes hiking, travelling, reading and entertaining his two daughters (aged 7 and 4).
