Dr. Andy Stephen received his Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Liverpool in Great Britain. His postdoctoral research at Washington University in St Louis focused on an analysis of the structure and function of the ubiquitin-activating enzyme. Andy joined the Rome lab in 1997 and turned his attention to making a vault RNA knockout mouse. In addition he collaborated with Eli Lilly Corp. to investigate the role of vaults in mutlidrug resistance. As a means to address how vaults assemble in vivo Andy started a project expressing MVP using the baculovirus system to determine if MVP alone is sufficient to form particles. Andy left the Rome lab in the summer of 2000 and moved to the NCI at Frederick MD where he is setting up drug screens to identify new therapeutics. However he misses working on such enigmatic particles and hopes to be kept fully up to date about any new vault discoveries!
