Peter Szilagyi, MD, MPH

Center Associate Faculty Member, CHCFC and Professor and Vice-Chair for Clinical Research, Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA

Dr. Szilagyi is Professor and Vice-Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Pediatrics and a leader of the child health and disparities populations components of UCLA’s Clinical Translational Science Institute (CTSI). He has extensive experience and national recognition as a pediatric health services researcher and educator. Before being recruited to UCLA in 2014, Dr. Szilagyi was Division Chief of General Pediatrics at the University of Rochester, Director of the General Pediatric Fellowship Program, co-director of the Greater Rochester Practice-based Research Network, and a community public health leader. He has spent considerable time working with communities. For example, for 20 years in Rochester he led a community-wide outreach program that demonstrated substantial rise in immunization rates in the inner city and reduction in disparities (and has been adopted elsewhere), was chair of the Board of Directors of upstate New York’s largest Medicaid managed care plan, and received the prestigious David Satcher Award for the individual who has most improved the health of the community. Dr. Szilagyi has mentored dozens of faculty, fellows, residents, PhD and MPH trainees and others locally and nationally and has won awards for his mentorship.

He is a renowned health services and implementation science and community-based researcher, focusing on strategies to improve preventive care services including immunization delivery, health insurance for children and care of children with public-health impact chronic diseases. In the field of immunizations his studies have contributed to the Vaccines for Children Program, strategies within the medical home to improve vaccine delivery, and a recent focus on adolescent immunizations. In the field of healthcare financing his studies have contributed to the formation and continuation of the Child Health Insurance Program (CHIP) program. He has 245 peer-reviewed publications, and is currently funded by NIH, AHRQ, and CDC.

He has served on NIH, AHRQ and CDC study sections. He is editor-in-chief of Academic Pediatrics, a past-president of the Academic Pediatric Association (APA) and a national board member of the APA. Dr. Szilagyi was recently appointed by the Secretary of HHS to the Medicaid and CHIP Advisory Commission (MACPAC) which advises Congress directly on policy issues related to Medicaid and CHIP. Finally Dr. Szilagyi is a primary care pediatrician and an outstanding clinical educator within the primary care setting and is pediatric editor of the Bates Guide to Physical Examination.
