SYSTEMS INNOVATION & IMPROVEMENT

Early Development Instrument (EDI)

The Early Development Instrument is a validated, population-based measure of early child development in five key domains (physical health, emotional maturity, social competence, language and cognitive skills, and communications skills and general knowledge). Through a partnership with developers at the Offord Center at McMaster University, the Center is licensed to administer a US version of the EDI. The EDI is a key component of the Center’s national Transforming Early Childhood Community Systems (TECCS) Initiative.

The Center for Healthier Children, Families and Communities continues to expanding implementation of the EDI in cities and communities across Los Angeles County and the United States. With funding from First 5 L.A. we have implemented the EDI in Venice, Lennox, Pasadena, South L.A., West L.A., Metro L.A., El Monte, Pomona, Rosemead, Long Beach, and Santa Monica. We have also supported communities across Orange County, Oakland, and San Jose. For more information about all the communities across the US who have implemented the EDI, please visit our national Transforming Early Childhood Community Systems (TECCS) Initiative.

Goals are to:

  • Produce valid and reliable citywide and neighborhood level data and maps representing children’s health and development across multiple domains
  • Actively engage city stakeholders in interpreting the data, and brainstorming local strategies for addressing geographic and/or domain specific variations in developmental outcomes
  • Foster collaboration to test local strategies for improving population outcomes
  • Connect participating L.A. cities to a National Learning Network to accelerate early childhood community systems improvement through exchange of ideas and sharing of best practices
