Scientists in the Crosbie-Watson lab reveal an important role for sarcospan in healing the dystrophic heart

'

Dr. Michelle Parvatiyar, a post-doctoral fellow in the Crosbie-Watson's lab, and winner of the Cure Duchenne Fellowship, recently published an article in the Journal of the American Heart Association. The team demonstrated that sarcospan plays an important role in protecting DMD hearts and showed that overexpression of sarcospan can slow development of heart disease in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. These studies provide evidence that sarcospan overexpression may represent a novel treatment strategy for Duchenne cardiomyopathy.
